This pain concentrates in the lower leg between the knee and ankle. Your doctor may refer to the condition as medial tibial stress syndrome MTSS.

Shin splints frequently affect people who engage in moderate to heavy physical activity. You may be more likely to develop shin splints if you participate in strenuous physical activities or stop-start sports such as tennis, racquetball, soccer, or basketball.

Shin splints is a cumulative stress disorder. Repeated pounding and stress on the bones, muscles , and joints of the lower legs prevents your body from being able to naturally repair and restore itself.

The pain associated with shin splints results from excessive amounts of force on the shin bone and the tissues attaching the shin bone to the muscles surrounding it.

The excessive force causes the muscles to swell and increases the pressure against the bone, leading to pain and inflammation. Shin splints can also result from stress reactions to bone fractures.

The constant pounding can cause minute cracks in the bones of the leg. The body can repair the cracks if given time to rest. Various activities and physical attributes can put you at risk of getting shin splints.

Risk factors include:. Shin splints are also more likely to occur when your leg muscles and tendons are tired.

Women, people with flat feet or rigid arches, athletes, military recruits, and dancers all have an increased likelihood of developing shin splints.

Your doctor will usually be able to diagnose shin splints during a physical exam. Doctors may prescribe diagnostic tests such as imaging scans and X-rays if they suspect that you might be suffering from bone fractures or a condition other than shin splints.

Shin splints normally require that you take a break from certain physical activities and give your legs time to rest.

The discomfort will usually resolve completely in a few hours or at most in a few days with rest and limited activity.

The suggested amount of downtime is typically about two weeks. During this time, you can engage in sports or activities that are less likely to cause additional harm to your legs.

These activities include swimming or walking. Check with your doctor before restarting any activities. Surgery is rarely used to treat shin splints.

Medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome, shin splints often occur in athletes who have recently intensified or changed their training routines.

The increased activity overworks the muscles, tendons and bone tissue. Most cases of shin splints can be treated with rest, ice and other self-care measures.

Wearing proper footwear and modifying your exercise routine can help prevent shin splints from recurring. If you have shin splints, you might notice tenderness, soreness or pain along the inner side of your shinbone and mild swelling in your lower leg.

At first, the pain might stop when you stop exercising. Eventually, however, the pain can be continuous and might progress to a stress reaction or stress fracture.

Shin splints are caused by repetitive stress on the shinbone and the connective tissues that attach your muscles to the bone.

By Caitlin Carlson. By William O. Roberts, MD. Shin splints, the catch-all term for lower leg pain that occurs below the knee either on the front outside part of the leg anterior shin splints or the inside of the leg medial shin splints , are the bane of many athletes, runners, tennis players, even dancers.

They often plague beginning runners who do not build their mileage gradually enough or seasoned runners who abruptly change their workout regimen, suddenly adding too much mileage, for example, or switching from running on flat surfaces to hills.

It might be a sign of some other problem. The following are two conditions that are sometimes mistakenly diagnosed as shin splints.

Pain on the anterior outside part of the lower leg may be compartment syndrome —a swelling of muscles within a closed compartment—which creates pressure.

To diagnose this condition, special techniques are used to measure the amount of pressure. The symptoms of compartment syndrome include leg pain, unusual nerve sensations, and eventually muscle weakness.

Pain in the lower leg could also be a stress fracture an incomplete crack in the bone , which is a far more serious injury than shin splints.

A bone scan is the definitive tool for diagnosing a stress fracture. However, there are clues you can look for that will signal whether or not you should get a bone scan.

The pain of shin splints is also more generalized than that of a stress fracture. Additionally, stress fractures often feel better in the morning because the bone has rested all night; they often feel worse in the morning because the soft tissue tightens overnight.

Shin splints are also at their most painful when you forcibly try to lift your foot up at the ankle and flex your foot.

There can be a number of factors at work, such as overpronation a frequent cause of medial shin splints , inadequate stretching, worn shoes, or excessive stress placed on one leg or one hip from running on cambered roads or always running in the same direction on a track.

The most common site for shin splints is the medial area the inside of the shin. Anterior shin splints toward the outside of the leg usually result from an imbalance between the calf muscles and the muscles in the front of your leg, and often afflict beginners who either have not yet adjusted to the stresses of running or are not stretching enough.

But what exactly is a shin splint? Fortunately, medical experts agree on how to treat them. Experts agree that when shin splints strike you should stop running completely or decrease your training depending on the extent and duration of pain.

Then, as a first step, ice your shin to reduce inflammation. Here are some other treatments you can try:. Gently stretch your Achilles if you have medial shin splints, and your calves if you have anterior shin splints.

Also, try this stretch for your shins: Kneel on a carpeted floor, legs and feet together and toes pointed directly back.

Then slowly sit back onto your calves and heels, pushing your ankles into the floor until you feel tension in the muscles of your shin.

Hold for 10 to 12 seconds, relax and repeat. In a sitting position, trace the alphabet on the floor with your toes.

Do this with each leg. Or alternate walking on your heels for 30 seconds with 30 seconds of regular walking.

An effective way to prevent shin splints is to strengthen the calf muscles and hip muscles, especially the hip abductors.

Calf muscle strengthening can be done by placing your toes on the edge of a curb or stair and transferring your weight to one leg.

Then slowly lower yourself and raise yourself up again. Repeat this 25 times. This will strength your calf muscles and help prevent shin splints.

Rotate the hip outward and then back again and repeat 25 times. Placing a Theraband around the knees will strengthen the muscles more.

Periostitis results in inflammation of the periosteum. Strengthening key muscles with these exercises will improve your running technique and help you avoid injury.
